Cultural Appropriateness

Ensure your content reflects elements recognised in the UK, avoiding houses, plants, animals, games, or foods that may not be relatable.

Relatability in Design

Scrutinise every element, no matter how small, to ensure relatability. Why is each item in your design? Is it needed, is it relevant? Avoid personal items that may have meaning only to either you or a very limited number of individuals.

Vehicle Copyright

If your design features any vehicles, make them generic to avoid copyright issues associated with specific brands. This includes the shape of the car and logo's. Very specific, brand related and recognisable car illustrations are not advised.

People

Use inclusive people designs. Consider drawing only outlines to avoid race or skin colour factors. Alternatively, hide faces or limit characteristics for a broad appeal.

Thoughtful Animal Depictions:

Evaluate the cultural appropriateness of animals in your designs. Ensure they exhibit character and relevance. What are your animals doing? Do they have plenty of personality and character? Are they smiling? What age demographic are you targeting? Are they too 'cute' or aimed at children when you are designing for adults?

Sports and Team Colours:

Avoid using specific team kit colours to appeal to a broader audience. Opt for generic designs and colours to maximize appeal.

Steer Clear of Brand Elements:

Refrain from using brand-related items such as logos, phrases, or celebrities. Think twice about using elements from specific video games, game controllers or drink bottles. Create generic designs to sidestep copyright issues. You cannot use anything that is in any way taken from another brand.

Greeting Card Aesthetics:

Is your design appropriate for a greeting card? Was this the designs original intention? If the design was made originally for something like a material pattern design it will likely need a lot of work to translate into a coherent card design. Strike a balance between creativity and appropriateness.

Presents in Designs:

Be mindful of featuring gifts prominently in your design. Some customers may not purchase a card with gift-centric imagery unless they are also buying a gift.

Strategic Text Placement:

Consider the placement of text within your design. Avoid placing text at the bottom, as it might be hidden when cards are stacked in stores. Opt for placements that capture attention and intrigue.

Crafting culturally conscious and relatable greeting cards involves thoughtful consideration of various elements. Keep these tips in mind as you embark on your creative journey to ensure your designs appeal to a wide and diverse audience.
